Two men seen outside Bali restaurant
Witnesses in Bali say two men with strong East Java accents were acting strangely outside one of the seafront restaurants targeted by suicide bombers on Saturday. Police quoted witness as saying the men were hanging around the Nyoman Cafe on the beach at Jimbaran Bay. East Java is only a short ferry ride from Bali, and a region where Jemaah Islamiah terror masterminds Azahari Husin and Noordin Top have drawn much of their support. Indonesian detective believe the suicide bombers were helped by accomplices - who may have even detonated the bombs by remote control with mobile phones. Bali police also say they are looking for a suspect in connection with the bombings. The suspect - identified by police only as AR - may have owned a shop where the bomb gang purchased materials used to make the explosive. Azahari had also been in the area, according to police intelligence. "He was mentioned as one of the Bali bombing planners," a police source said. "He was also said to be involved in the Australian embassy bombing." Police had already raided AR's house, but he had apparently not been staying there since the start of this year, returning only briefly to visit. Top Indonesian anti-terror official Major-General Ansyaad Mbai said on Monday he believed the bombs were remotely triggered by at least three men in addition to the suicide bombers. Forensic police said they would hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss evidence uncovered so far in the investigation and reconcile it with information from Australian Federal Police bomb experts. |
