Our Safety is Paramount

By Joan Sheldon.

Whatever happened to the concept of being a patriot? Has the word traitor lost its currency? Daily we witness interviews with so-called Australians citizens whose self proclaimed loyalties are not in the best interests of Australia or its citizens.

As a democracy, we hold dear our freedom of speech beliefs and religion. However, the guiding rule is that with these freedoms come responsibilities.

Responsibilities as to the wellbeing and safety and security of our democratic nation and its peoples.

Democracy does not give any individual the right to enunciate or commit any cause of action that would endanger this nation and the lives of fellow Australians.

In the recent past, individuals who indulged in speech that incited others to such action of those who perpetrated such action were deemed to be traitors. They were charged, tried in a court of law and if found guilty, were penalised accordingly.

What has happened to this fundamental fact?

At a time when democratic nations around the world are reeling with the threat and tragic actions of terrorism, it is beyond belief that we have people clearly and unequivocally espousing this terrorism and its aftermath.

This goes beyond the concept of democracy and threatens all Australians and our way of life.

If one is an Australian citizen, regardless of one's country of birth, then the laws that govern this country as set out in our constitution and enacted by elected governments, are supreme.

No other laws, religious or otherwise, prevail.

Is it therefore not a crime if a citizen says there are two laws in this land - one, our constitutional laws, the other religious - and that the religious law prevails.

These utterances are even graver when the individual making them uses, as justification, their interpretation of their holy book to condone violence and death, all in the name of their God.

The real evil occurs when such people incite vulnerable young people to lay down their own lives and to take the lives of others, in order to attain instant glory in the afterlife.

The results of such actions lead to the terrorism we are experiencing globally.

Innocent people are slaughtered to make a point and to attain conversion, by fear and intimidation, to a particular religious philosophy.

There is no justification for such action and those preaching this hatred and global domination should be severely dealt with.

The safety of Australians must take precedence over all other issues.

We, the great silent majority, need to exhort our governments to take whatever action is required in order to minimise the risk of violence to their citizens.

If those inciting, training or equipping these terrorists are Australian citizens, then the full weight of our laws and their sanctions should be applied without fear or favour. If such persons are not Australian citizens, they should be deported without delay to their country of origin.

In either case, these people are not worthy to call themselves Australian and to accept the privileges which our great nation bestows on them.
