Beaming Mary and babe make public debut

Oct 18 23:50 AEST
Denmark's Princess Mary and her
new-born son have made their first public appearance, with the Tasmanian-born
princess showing off her baby to the media just 84 hours after birth.
The appearance at Copenhagen's Rigs
hospital, where Mary delivered the boy early on Saturday morning, was watched by
a crowd of several hundred people waving Danish and Australian flags.
She said it had been a "truly
wonderful" experience.
"I am feeling wonderful - it's been
a truly wonderful life experience," Mary said.
"Words can't describe how happy one
feels.
"We
are very excited by all the messages and well-wishers.
"It's really very touching."
Mary, Crown Prince Frederik and son
took their leave after a five-minute photo call at the hospital, leaving by red
carpet to an awaiting car that drove them to their residence at Freedenberg
Palace north of Copenhagen
The couple walked to the car and
together they placed the young child in a baby capsule in the back seat, just
like any other couple leaving hospital after a birth.
Mary then slid into the back seat
beside the baby as Prince Frederik drove away, waving at the crowd.
The new mother was wearing a black
dress and a green and white coat.
She looked relaxed, elegant and
happy as she emerged from the hospital, the young prince asleep and cradled in
her left arm.
The photo-call was a massive media
event, with television outside-broadcast vans and satellite vans stretched for
more than 200 meters outside the maternity wing of the hospital.
More than 100 members of the media
were crowded into the hospital lobby, with dozens of camera-crew balanced upon
ladders to capture the best shot.
The new prince - expected to be
named Christian in line with Danish tradition - was asleep in his mother's arms
as they left the hospital.
He will have his next media
appearance at his christening, expected early next year.
The new-born prince was Princess
Mary's first, but she had previously said she wanted to have a large family.
When asked what she was going to do
when the she arrived home at the palace, Mary said, "Change the diapers".
She said Frederik had been of great
assistance during the birth.
"He was actually a big help - I
could not have managed without him," the princess said.
She confirmed the baby was
breastfeeding and said it was going well.
Although the baby is yet to be
named, Mary said she and Frederik have been calling him lots of different names
in the meantime. |
