STEVE Irwin, the safari-suited "crocodile hunter" and television presenter, was killed by a stingray yesterday while filming a documentary series called Ocean's Deadliest.

 

Racing legend Peter Brock killed

Australian motor sport legend Peter Brock has died after his car hit a tree during a rally in Western Australia today.

Brock was competing on the second day of the Targa West Rally when his Daytona Coupe hit a tree near the small community of Gidgegannup, about 40 kilometres east of Perth.

 

British regulators lift tourism ad ban

British advertising regulators have decided to lift a television ban on Australia's latest tourism campaign.

Federal Tourism Minister Fran Bailey says the announcement came after a series of meetings with the Advertising Standards Authority and the British Tourism Minister in London.

On the 16th August 1766, Carolina Oliphant was born in Gask, Perthshire. A poet, she added her words to old folk tunes. Her parents were staunch Jacobite supporters and many of her works, including "Charlie is my Darling", reflect her family's sympathies. Scotland got a taste of the military skill of Oliver Cromwell on the 3 September in 1650 as his Roundheads thump our boys at the battle of Dunbar. This small Scottish town has experienced many clashes in its time, situated as it is on the road to Edinburgh from England. It is also notable as the birthplace of the environmentalist John Muir. Michelangelo Buonarotti unveiled his painting on the ceiling of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel on this day in 1512. It took him four years to paint the detailed Biblical scenes for Pope Julius II.
