Although on the north bank of the river Tweed, the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed was officially declared part of England on the 24th August in 1482 after changing hands on numerous occasions in the past. Due to the town's turbulent history it received special mention in government documents along with England and Scotland, and, if missed out can lead to peculiar situations. In 1856, for instance, Britain signed a peace treaty with Russia but Berwick-on-Tweed wasn't mentioned. The result?
