Celtic Football Club was formally constituted on the 6th November in 1887 by Brother Walfrid, a priest who dedicated his life to helping the poor. Founded with the intention of "alleviating poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes", Celtic played their first official game a year later, losing 5-2 to arch-rivals Rangers. Robert Allan, poet and songwriter, was born in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, on the 4th November in 1774. His works, published by Robert Burns Hardy of Glasgow, while attracting a great deal of admiration from lovers of Scottish song, failed to earn him enough money to continue his legacy. Today was a quiet day in the visit of George IV to Scotland on the 19th August 1822, the first visit of a reigning monarch to Scotland since Charles II in 1650. George's visit saw the birth of the modern image of Scotland, orchestrated by Sir Walter Scott who had persuaded George that he had legitimate Jacobite lineage. Highland dress suddenly became immensely fashionable and lowlanders across Scotland rushed to discover highland ancestry so they could sport the suddenly trendy kilt in varieties of dashing new tartan. click here
