Historical Facts ...

James II of Scotland meets an unfortunate end on the 3 August 1460 when one of his artillery pieces explodes during the siege of Roxburgh castle, killing the nearby king instantly. To read more about this Scots monarch and others of the Stewart dynasty go to heritage.scotsman.com

 

James Clerk Maxwell, mathematician and physicist, died on the 5th November 1879. Born in Edinburgh, Maxwell was most famous for the "Maxwell equations", which relate to the behaviour of electric and magnetic fields and which later paved the way for technological advances such as radio and x-ray. James Ramsay MacDonald, died on the 9th November 1937. MacDonald, one of the pioneers of British socialism, was Labour's first Prime Minister, holding office twice between 1924 and 1935. With no secondary education, MacDonald rose to his position because of his passionate public speeches. He was expelled from the Labour party during his second term in office, but remained in the Cabinet until his death. For more on modern-day politics click here

 

On the 12 March in 1286 Margaret (Maid of Norway) was crowned Queen of Scotland. She died on the sea voyage to Britain, leaving Scotland in a perilous state, which King Edward of England was only too keen to exploit to his own ends.
